Abstract

In this work, we evaluate the specific capacity of two rechargeable batteries in function of charging/discharging current: a commercially available Li-ion battery and a second cell fabricated in our research laboratory using Fuelcon B Evaluator test station in conjunction with an electronic bridge to set and monitor de currents and voltages. The commercially battery is a used Li-ion cell that underwent different functional protocols as part of a battery stack of an old laptop computer.

Li ion batteries were tested under different changing/discharging condition with the goal to determinate specific capacity, also under a constant charge current of 1A until the voltage reached a value about 4.3 V for 2h. After this step, we keep the potential constant until the value of the current was equal with C/24 (10mA) for almost 1h. The discharge experiment started when OCV (open circuit potential) was constant. The cell discharge experiments stops when the potential drops below 2.7V.

We are able to carry out detailed investigations of the charge/discharge capacity of Li-ion batteries in controlled atmosphere and given temperatures. Calculated specific capacitance reveals good charging/discharging behavior for both secondary batteries and we can as well conclude that temperature variation produced small variation of capacitance.
